The latest high-protein diet of Hollywood, which has helped reduce the figure of the actress Jennifer Aniston and the former Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell, won the approval of Australian scientists, over conventional systems.

A study by a leading Australian research group, the Organization of Scientific and Industrial Research of the British Commonwealth, found that the controversial diet had a faster weight loss than traditional programs high in carbohydrates.

The study of 100 overweight women, most in their late 40, found that following a diet low in calories and high in protein lost six kilos of body fat over a period of twelve weeks, while following a diet low in calories and high in carbohydrates lost just three kilos.

“A diet high in protein and low in calories is an effective and perfectly valid and safe alternative to lose weight,” said the expert on diets of the organization, Dr Manny Noakes said in a statement.

“This study is significant because little research has been conducted in the area (…) method high in protein and low fat weight loss certainly offers advantages over conventional diets,” the statement said it had access to Reuters.

In the study of the organization, women with high-protein diet ate 200 grams of lean red meat at night and 100 grams of chicken or fish at lunch and dairy products low in calories.

The diet includes some carbohydrates such as fruit and bread.

In general, high protein diet comprised 34 per cent protein, 20 percent fat and 46 percent carbohydrates, while the high-carbohydrate diet consisted of a 17 percent protein, 20 percent fat and 63 percent carbohydrates.

Noakes said that in addition to faster weight loss, high protein diet had other advantages.

One is that it is easier to maintain, since those who take to eat a piece of red meat, they would more satisfied and less hungry, while the percentage of those who left the diet high in carbohydrates was three times higher.

“The diet helps to stabilize the production of glucose and insulin, which can help control hunger,” he said.
